Burn Brae Majors

Art
The Art Department at Burn Brae is divided into four special areas: Ceramics, Crafts, Drawing and Painting. As an Art Major, the camper is exposed to all four areas of art. As an Art Minor, the camper chooses which area he/she would like to concentrate on. Ceramics class teaches the campers to use the wheel as week as building by hand, many different techniques of glazing are explored, and campers are challenged to create as many quality pieces they choose to. All materials are included in the camp tuition fee. In Drawing and Painting, the camper uses many different materials such as pen and ink, pencils, pastels, charcoal, chalk, tempera, watercolors, and acrylic paints. With these materials, the camper completes drawings, paintings, and other projects while learning about line, form, and function as well as color, composition and graphics. The painting teacher includes art history in the lessons and the campers study the works of many famous artists. Artwork is on display each Friday at showtime and at both art festivals. In Crafts, the camper uses many different media to create many different projects. Printmaking, plaster, mirrors, masks, woven bracelets, hook rugs, kites, picture frames, puppet making, jewelry, miniature houses, decorative pillows, and stuffed animals are just some of the many projects created in Crafts.

Theater
In Non-Musical Theater, campers learn acting techniquesfor both comedy and drama, with scripts and from improvisation. Frequently, the campers, along with the theater director, will create their own scripts that will be performed on our stage in front of an audience.

Musical Theater
Campers who major in Musical Theater are challenged, invigorated and enriched in all aspects of musical theater. From auditioning to intense character development to understanding what lies beyond the words in a script, campers devote themselves to the wonderful craft of acting. The finished product is a full scale performance complete with music and dance. Senior campers (ages 10-14) who major in Musical Theater have an intensive Theater experience and spend a significant portion of their camp day within this program learning the art of "show business." Junior Musical Theater majors (ages 7-9) keep their regular daily camp schedule, spending the usual one-and-a-half hours per day in their major.

Music
We teach piano, brass, woodwinds, strings, guitar and drums, and accomodate all levels of experience including beginners who are unable to read music. Our classes are taught by professional music instructors on a private and small group basis. For ensemble playing, our campers can participate in Rock Band, Jazz Band and Orchestra. Rock Band has become very popular for ages 7 to 14. We have a Junior Rock Band for ages 7 to 9 and a Senior Rock Band for ages 10 to 14. Not only do our rock bands consist of guitarists, drummers, keyboard players and other instrumentalists, there are singers as well. Campers majoring or minoring in musical instruments perform solos, duets or as an ensemble at showtime and at the musical recitals for the arts festivals.

Dance
The Dance Department offers ballet, tap, jazz, modern, hip-hop and choreography. The Dance Major will receive training in all areas whereas the Dance Minor will concentrate on one or two of their choosing. There are many opportunities to perform.
