Burn Brae Day Camp’s highly qualified staff members are experts at dealing with children as well as being experts in their own field. Our certified teachers are educational professionals, highly trained artists, and performers who nurture and develop our campers’ creative gifts. Our mature staff cares about each individual child as is evident in the camper/staff relationships that form each summer.
Lisa Kasser started Burn Brae Day Camp in 1981 and has been the Owner and Director ever since. She's thrilled to be celebrating the camp's 37th summer. Lisa majored in Theater and Dance at the University of Michigan and has starred in productions in the United States and Canada and appeared in a two person off Broadway play on PBS. In the early ’80s, Lisa was the Associate Producer of Channel 17’s Dancin’ on Air. She has also taught and directed children’s theater. Lisa attended camp throughout her childhood and teenage years and continues to find enjoyment and inspiration in camp life everyday! She has one adult daughter who had attended Burn Brae since the age of two months. Lisa is also the owner of Maggie, a loving Bichon/Poodle, who is the camp mascot!
Mike B. has been at Burn Brae for the past 16 summers. This is his 8th year as our Assistant Director. Prior to that, Mike was our Athletic Director. He has worked at the Upper Moreland Intermediate School as a School Psychologist for 20 years. He earned his PhD in school psychology from Temple University. He has two daughters who both grew up at Burn Brae. His younger daughter, an accomplished guitarist, learned to play here at camp. Mike is an avid coach, sports lover, and basketball player.
Julie R. has a Master’s Degree in School Counseling from the College of New Jersey, and has taught elementary and middle school for the last ten years. She is currently teaching at a middle school in Cheltenham, PA. She is our camper advisor for all ages, and French teacher to our Pre-Majors. She also runs the very popular Teen Quest program for our 13-15 year olds.
Joanna W. received her Bachelor of Science in nursing from Penn State University. She has been a school nurse in the North Penn School District for many years. Joanna was the healthcare director and nurse for an overnight camp, and conference center, and was a nurse at a pediatric long-term facility in the local area. Joanna is the mom of a new Burn brae camper.
Barbara S. is a retired teacher, administrator, and staff developer. She has two Master’s Degrees in Elementary Education and Education Leadership. After spending many summers at Burn Brae, Barbara's son has become an accomplished musician and he spends his summers teaching music here at Burn Brae. This is Barbara's 8th year at Burn Brae.
Part Time Assistant Office Manager
Michelle S. has her BA from the University of Rochester - a double major in Economics and Psychology, as well as a Business Certificate in Marketing. During the year she works here at camp managing the camp website, database, Fall and Spring Activities, communications and preparing for camp. Michelle does contracting work for market research firms as well. She is on the PTO Board at Sandy Run Middle School and is on the Steering Committee for Upper Dublin’s Everybody’s Theater Company. She also choreographs and teaches dance and theater for E.T.C.
Office Assistant/Pastry Arts
Tara B. has her Master’s Degree in Special Ed from Arcadia and is certified to teach home economics, consumer science, and cooking. She is a special education teacher at a Bucks County high school. In addition to teaching Pastry Arts here at camp, she also helps organize our summer special events and year-round birthday parties. This is Tara's 8th year at Burn Brae.
Office Assistant/Special Events/Theme Days
Bari L. has owned an event planning, and custom decorations company, for the past 10 years. Prior to that, she worked in office management and sales. She is the mom to 3 Burn Brae campers.
Pre-Major A Lead Counselor (ages 3-4 campers)
Rachel B. has a BA in American Sign Language and Linguistics from the University of Rochester as well as a Masters in Education from Arcadia University. During the year Rachel is a math and learning support teacher at a renowned private school in Philadelphia. She spent thirteen years as co-director of the Repertory Theater at Willow Grove Day Camp until they closed.
Pre-Major B Lead Counselor (age 5 campers)
Laura C. received her Doctorate from Temple University Law School. She is a Daisy Girl Scout Leader, the Cheer Leading Commissioner for Upper Dublin, and coaches cheer leading. Her team came in 2nd in the country this year! She his the mom of 3 Burn Brae campers. This is her 4th summer with us.
Pre-Major C Lead Counselor (age 6 campers)
Lisa M. has a BA in Psychology from Gwynedd Mercy College, Masters in Special Ed from Arcadia University. She is a certified education teacher and teaches in the School District of Springfield Township. She also tutored reading and math at the Sylvan Learning Center and privately. Lisa is the mom of a Burn Brae camper, and this is her 5th summer with us.
Step-Up Counselor (ages 7-8 campers)
Jennifer S. just received her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education from West Chester University. She has worked at a Before and After program in a West Chester Public School. She's been a camper and a camp counselor for most of her life. This is Jen's 3rd summer with our Step Up campers.
Step-Up Instructor (ages 7-8 campers)
Shannon K. received her Bachelor's Degree in both general education and special education from Arcadia University. She currently works at a reputable private day school as the lead teacher for 3-5 year olds. Prior to that, Shannon was an assistant teacher for Pre-K students for 3 years at an early learning center. In addition, she babysits for multiple families in the area and owns a candle making business.
Teen Quest Co-Counselor (ages 13-15 campers)
Scott J. has worked at Burn Brae for the last four summers as a head counselor of Teen Quest and a sports counselor. Scott has both a BA and his Master’s in Education from Temple University. During the year, Scott is a middle school history and English teacher. From 2002-2005 he did live on-air traffic reports for KYW-AM radio. He is the dad of 2 Burn Brae campers.
Doug S. has a BA from Indiana University of PA, as well as a Master’s Degree in curriculum and Instruction. Doug is a High School Spanish teacher in Bucks County and the High School Track Coach for Boys at a local public high school. Prior to Burn Brae, he was the pool director at another local summer camp. This is Doug's 3rd summer at Burn Brae, and he is the dad of 2 Burn Brae campers.
Mike R. has a BS degree in Kinesiology from Penn State University and a masters degree in Education from Cabrini College. He is the physical education teacher at a K-8 public school in Philadelphia. He also coaches for the boys' and girls' volleyball teams and their boys' basketball team. This is Mike's 4th year with us, and he is the dad of a Burn Brae camper.
Rock Band/Guitar/Banjo/Ukulele Instructor
Jay K. has been making music at Burn Brae for almost two decades. He has an extensive background as a performer and instrumental teacher. Jay teaches at Settlement Music School and teaches private lessons to numerous students. All year round, kids enjoy Rock Band Jam classes with Jay here at Burn Brae.
Brass/Woodwinds/Piano/Jazz Band/Voice Instructor
Karen M. received her Master’s in Education from Wilkes University. She is certified to teach kindergarten through twelfth grade and teaches general music and band in the Central Bucks School District. In addition, Karen is CPR, AED, and First Aid certified. She is also on the faculty of Chestnut Hill College of Music and Technology. She has taught instrumental lessons, directed bands, musicals, and choirs in several schools as well as being the music director in many churches, and conducting adult choirs. This is Karen's 7th summer with us, and she is the mom of a Burn Brae camper.
Cyndi N. has a Master’s Degree in Music from Temple University. Cyndi is an Elementary Strings Specialist who teaches orchestra full-time in the Upper Dublin School District and performs at various venues. We have been happy to have Cyndi with us for the past several summers.
Ross M. has a Bachelors of Music, Georgia State University and Masters of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music. Ross is an adjunct Professor of Music at Penn State Abington, Delaware Community College and Bucks County Community College. He is a faculty member of Temple University's Music Preparatory division and has a private music studio in Philadelphia where he teaches both adults and children.
Kendra W. is receiving her Bachelors in Music Education from Honors College at West Chester University. She is the recipient of the Board of Governor's Scholarship. She plays saxophone, piano, clarinet, flute, and has been in the West Chester University Golden Rams Marching Band. Kendra plays professionally in a local Jazz and Rock Band group that performs all over the Philadelphia area. She was the Robotics team captain at her high school and mentors their robotics team for 9th and 10th graders.
Painting/Drawing/Fashion Design Instructor
Emily E. has a BA in Art Education from Kutztown University. She is an art teacher in the Philadelphia School District. Emily is an accomplished artist. This will be Emily's 7th summer with us, and she is the mom of a Burn Brae camper.
Abbie E. received her BFA in art education from Palm Beach Atlantic University. She currently works at a well-known clay studio and school in Philadelphia as a ceramics teacher for children and adults. Abbie was on the faculty of a prestigious clay studio in New England for 3 years and has won awards for her own ceramic work.
Luke D. received his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of the Arts. Luke has a wealth of experience in the art industry as a curator and manager of an art gallery, teaching assistant, installation and studio assistant to a well-known artist, intern at a prestigious clay studio in Philadelphia, ran an after school ceramics program, and is a resident artist at the University of the Arts.
Tori S. is completing her BFA in Dance at Temple University. She is currently a dance teacher at a reputable local dance studio teaching children and teens all styles of dance. She is also a children's dance teacher at the famed Koresh Dance Academy in Philadelphia. Tori was a dance performer at the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company in Israel and attended La Bella Vita Arts Summer Dance Intensive in Italy.
Musical Theater Lead/Special Effects Makeup Instructor
Maggie S. received a BFA in Musical Theatre from Montclair State University. She has starred in numerous roles at The Eagle Theatre, Broadway Theatre of Pitman, and has worked at The Walnut Street and Bristol Riverside Theatres. She has taught for Theatre Horizon and Storybook Musical Theatre for 3 years, as well as private lessons. She has also directed musicals at Lower Merion MS and Cheltenham HS. She can be seen performing in two shows at Bristol Riverside Theatre this summer, as well as at Glenside's Dino's Backstage in August, and at The Eagle Theatre in Sept.-Oct. Maggie has a daughter attending camp this summer.
Movie Production, TV/Video, Improv Theater Instructor
Eric V.W. has a BFA from University of the Arts. He is a drama and comedy improv teacher and performer. He has performed at Theater Ariel, Comedy Sportz, Historic Philadelphia Storyteller, Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre, Wilma Theatre, 1812 Productions, Act II Playhouse, various TV commercials, and radio voice overs. He is the Business Manager and a performer of Fred's Magic World, a well known comedy magic show for the past 15 years. This is Eric's 4th summer with us, and he is the dad of a Burn Brae camper.
Movie Production Instructor
Justin L. received his MFA in Acting from University of California, Irvine, his BA from University of Northern Colorado, and is a graduate of The Groundlings’ School of Improvisation. He recently moved from Los Angeles where he was an Associate Chair in the Acting for Film Department at the New York Film Academy’s LA campus. He is now the Head of the Acting Program at University of the Arts where he teaches the Sophomore Acting Studio as well as other core curriculums. He is excited to be here with us at Burn Brae this summer!
Anne Margaret O. received her BFA in Dance from University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She also received training in many forms of dance, both nationally and internationally. Anne Margaret is an associate professor at Temple University where she teaches an arts curriculum, and a professor of dance at Eastern University in St. Davids, PA. She is on the faculty of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. Anne Margaret has been a professional actress, dancer, choreographer, and musician for over three decades. She is a Teaching Artist of Flamenco at Ole Tapas Restaurant in Newark, Delaware and can be seen performing locally with Latin Fiesta. This is Anne Margaret's 7th summer with us, and she is the mom of a Burn Brae camper.
Archery/Sports/Computer Animation Instructor
Hal L. received a BA in Elementary Education and ESL certification from Penn State University. He also received his MA from Gratz College. He is a Computer Science teacher at a K-8 public school in Philadelphia. This is Hal's 4th summer with us, and he is the dad of a Burn Brae camper, and a Burn Brae Apprentice.
Tennis/Brain Games Instructor
Rick T. is a retired teacher and now substitutes in many different area school districts (K-12) each day of the school year. He used to race sailboats and has coached six different sports during his life, including tennis. He was also the tennis pro at the former Willow Grove Day Camp for several summers. Rick has taught brain games (games of strategy) for several years at a tutoring company. We are happy to have Rick back for his 3rd summer at Burn Brae.
Craig B. studied Entomology and Applied Ecology at University of Delaware. He is a science teacher at a private school in New Jersey. He has over thirty years of experience as a science and nature specialist and teacher, and also teaches musical instruments, and performs in bands. This is Craig's 7th summer with us, and he is the dad of a Burn Brae camper, and a Burn Brae Apprentice.
Jacob M. attends the University of Pittsburgh and is pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in math. He has worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor at a local golf and country club for the past 3 summers. Jacob was on the Upper Dublin High School varsity swim team and their varsity water polo team. He has also been a lifeguard and lead swim instructor at a Boy Scout of America camp for several summers. Jake is a national merit scholar and an Eagle Scout.
Megan P. attends the Pratt Institute where she is pursuing a Bachelor's in writing. She has worked for many years as a swim instructor and lifeguard at a local swim club and has been an assistant swim coach for children ages 5-18 years old.
Jennifer L. is graduating from St. Basil Academy and will be majoring in Criminal Justice and Political Science in the fall. Jennifer has worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the local YMCA and has been certified scuba diver since the age of 11.
